A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Diabetes Care, the journal of the American Diabetes Association, showed that the prediabetic group who received turmeric extract had zero instances of diabetes development after nine months.
In the placebo group, 16.4% went on to develop diabetes at end of the nine month study. None of the curcumin group developed diabetes.
The researchers concluded: “In addition, the curcumin treatment appeared to improve overall function of β-cells, with very minor adverse effects. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the curcumin intervention in a prediabetic population may be beneficial.”

Study Shows Tea May Prevent Cognitive Decline
According to a recent study, daily tea consumption can reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
This study by the National University of Singapore included almost one thousand Chinese participants aged 55 years or older, surveyed over a seven year period.
Researchers gathered information on the participants’ cognitive status, tea consumption, lifestyle, behaviors, medical conditions, and social activities.
When the study was complete, the research team discovered some impressive findings…
The participants who regularly consumed tea were up to 50% less likely to experience age-related cognitive decline.
In other words, tea was found to protect the aging brain.
But the findings didn’t end there.
For those genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s disease (APOE e4 gene carriers) there was also a reduction in risk of cognitive decline during the study.
The study director, Assistant Professor Feng Lei, commented on the results saying, “The data from our study suggests that a simple and inexpensive lifestyle measure such as daily tea drinking can reduce a person’s risk of developing neurocognitive disorders in late life.”

Drink Green, Black or Oolong Tea for Brain Benefits
While herbal teas have many benefits, you need tea derived from the tea plant to protect your brain from losing its spark. That means green tea, black tea or oolong tea.
Feng Lei noted that the long term benefit of regular tea drinking is believed to be due to the bioactive compounds in tea leaves, which include catechins, theaflavins, thearubigins, and L-theanine.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association finally solves unanswered questions about calcium and heart health. Depending on HOW you get your calcium, it can either be good or bad for your heart. These results have real implications for the 43% of people who take a supplement that includes calcium.
When Calcium is Bad for the Heart
This was big news. Calcium can be bad for your heart. Here’s how they figured it out.
Researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine took a deep dive into 10 years’ worth of medical tests on over 2,700 adults participating in US government heart study.
Most importantly, they looked at calcium intake as well as the SOURCE of the calcium. They separated the results into those taking calcium supplements and those getting calcium from food.
The results are striking. They found that those taking calcium supplements had a significant increase in the risk of heart disease and had higher rates of plaque buildup in their arteries.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Erin Michos said, “Our study adds to the body of evidence that excess calcium in the form of supplements may harm the heart and vascular system.”
Several studies have previously suggested calcium from supplements does not get to bones or is not fully excreted, and so accumulates in soft tissues.
When Calcium is Good for the Heart
Now for the good news: Researchers were able to show a huge benefit for heart health when calcium came from FOOD sources.
People who got calcium from food—such as dark leafy veggies or dairy—had a much lower risk of heart disease.
Why should there be an increased risk from supplements but not from food sources?
Study co-author John Anderson, who is the professor emeritus of nutrition at the University of North Carolina, put it this way:
“It could be that supplements contain calcium salts, or it could be from taking a large dose all at once that the body is unable to process.”
The Source of Calcium Makes All the Difference
Since heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women, this study should cause everyone to look at the source of calcium they consume.

The following is a short but important blog by Dr. Andy Warchola about the connection between pain and nutrition.
As a chiropractor in active practice for 25 years I see people of all ages who come in for a variety of reasons. Most often it is centered on some type of discomfort or pain symptom.
It’s important to know there is a connection between inadequate nutrition and pain. Nutrition (or under-nutrition) is a factor in many of the symptoms I treat in my office including back pain, limb pain, and headaches.
The Real Root of Pain
Most discomfort we feel comes from hyperactive nerve or muscle tone; and/or inflammation and swelling. It doesn’t matter if the pain location is in the spine, head or internal organs area.
Muscles, nerves, our immune and hormone systems need adequate amounts of plant-sourced nutrients to maintain the biochemistry for optimal function.
Insufficient vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants can cause muscles to stay hypertonic and sore, especially after they have been worked hard.

A Prescription for Health

And I am never broken
I think we all have thoughts about what it will be like to grow older. However, nothing can fully prepare us for it.
I remember that my most prominent thoughts were kinda silly. I really didn't wanna end up looking frumpy! I didn't want to wear "shifts and polyester pants"! I wanted to stay "cool". I worked in clothing and really like how dressing cool made me feel. Shifts and polyester pants sound pretty darn comfy these days!! Lol!
As I prepare to become a grandma, all of my thoughts about growing older are different. They aren't all super clear to me yet, but certainly more important and alot deeper than what kind of pants I'm gonna wear!
My thoughts are much more about the messages I got from the Jewel song about hands. I want to hold things that matter, I want to use my hands to help, I want my hands to represent safety and comfort, I want to reach for those I love, and I want to receive the love being offered to me with great grace.
I still don't wanna dress frumpy, but I think our style and fashion grows with us. We don't all of a sudden wake up older and decide to dress badly. My style has shifted a little more towards comfort but I have some pretty incredible people in my life helping to keep me cool and age appropriate!
So, I want to walk hand in hand with my husband, I want my children to stay willing to give me a hand when I need it and I can't wait to hold those tiny little grandbaby hands in my own.

Father's Day 2015 came this year like all others before it, but I didn't really acknowledge it. Our girls were here for the morning and we met them for breakfast, then our son took my husband to dinner later that day, so my husband certainly felt honored and for that I am grateful. I, however, spent the day having conversations with people like me, fatherless.
Fatherless, not in the pitiful sense, just reality.
Let me share my story because when I hear it, I think it sounds like a movie! Maybe you will too :)
When my mother found herself pregnant with me, my father had already decided to leave. He did know she was pregnant, but had reasons to doubt that I was his. She married someone else before I was born so my birth certificate had this man's name and not my real father's. And, this man left before I was born.
During my mother's pregnancy she was overwhelmed to say the least. I was to be her 7th child and in less than 9 months her 6th and 7th husband came and went. She found herself with 6 kids, another on the way, no husband, so, overwhelmed was likely an understatement.
While she was pregnant she became close friends with her neighbors, Freida and Arnold. Freida and Arnold were truly amazing people that had 2 adopted sons because Freida was unable to bear children. The 3 of them decided that once I was born Freida and Arnold would unofficially adopt me. As the months continued this decision felt more and more right.
On December 31st, 1959 at 10 minutes to midnight, I decided to make my debut. From the sounds of it, everyone was pretty excited. Especially Freida and Arnold.
At the hospital, my mother's mother said enough to change my mother's mind about giving me to Freida and Arnold and sent my oldest sister to let them know that they would not be having a daughter this night. When they told me this part of the story, they could not hold back their tears. They were devastated and felt like their newborn baby died.
So, I went home with my mother and met my 6 siblings. It only took my mother a day to realize what a huge mistake keeping me was. Her fears throughout the pregnancy about her inability to raise one more child were quickly made clear. Guess what she did? She walked me next door and presented me to Freida and Arnold as their new daughter. They described this day like "Christmas"!
However, she told my 6 siblings that I had died.
Picture the scene if you can. 2 houses side by side. 1 celebrating a baby girl that appeared like a miracle. The other house, right next door, mourning the loss of a beautiful new life. Me, that new life, kinda caught in between.
Of course I have no memories of this time and these events, but we know that those first few sacred hours of life are so precious and important. So important, I believe, that this start to life impacted me profoundly. I did not learn of any of this until I was a young teen, but at the age of 7, I started having a reoccurring dream that suggests that this specific start to life left an innate sense of abandonment and/or confusion at the least. At age 7, almost nightly I dreamed that my mom (Freida) and I were on a walk and I needed to sit on the curb to tie my shoe. As I tied my shoe, my mom kept walking and I couldn't get up. I would awake from this dream in a panic and run to my mom's bed crying.
I know, I know, this is supposed to be a late Father's Day message. I'm getting there, hang in there with me.
Lots of people I know don't have fathers. My daughters are actually two of those very people. Their father died when they were young teens. My husband's father died a few years ago. My close friend (who is a wonderful person) has a father that chooses to have no contact with her. Another young lady I know has a dad that obviously favors her sister. And I feel like I had 3 fathers that influenced my life. My biological father left, my step father left before I was born, my adopted father (Arnold) died several years ago, and my biological father died shortly thereafter.
My story continues and gets even more "movie like". I actually ended up meeting my biological father and our resemblance is remarkable. but my point thus far is simply that Father's Day is different for people for so many reasons.
There were lots of alternative Father's Day messages shared this year and I just wanted to share a part of mine. I think if I didn't have the assurance of the never-ending love from my Heavenly Father, I would be a mess today. My start was compromised, my life has been challenging, but my end is secure. A Father's love is crucial. A father's love, faithfulness, and support is supposed to paint a picture of God's love for us. We can survive lots of disappointments in life if we have the assurance of God's unconditional and unending love.
The folks I know that are fatherless, certainly know this. It is the reason Father's Day is still a wonderful day for all of us.

The other day I was with a few friends and something was said that has had me thinking all week.
I like clothes. I worked in ladies fashion for many years and my heart loved it! I say that to say, that I usually dress pretty cute. Not bragging, just that I do indeed like clothes and people often say they like my outfits.
So, the other day when I was having dinner with my friends, one of them said "that dress looks so cute on you, but I don't think I could wear it". That wasn't what struck me. What struck me was the response from one of the other gals. She said, "that is because Connie loves her body". Even though that caught me off guard, it took several days for me to come to what I want to share with you today.
We have all heard it, "You need to love your body just the way it is". But, do we? Do we really?
I think the message we have really gotten is that we need to say that we love what we see no matter what we really think when we look in the mirror. Is that honest, though?
I am gonna share a bit of my back story with you. I am trusting that I can be honest and transparent with you. My reason is to help. If you can relate with anything I share, it is well worth any embarrassment or shame on my part.
I grew up in the Los Angeles area in the late 60s, early 70s. I began experimenting with drugs at age 12. The experimenting only lasted a minute and I was quickly into full blown drug and alcohol abuse. I did drugs everyday and drank too much alcohol every weekend. So from the age of 12 until the day I found out that I was pregnant with my first daughter at age 24, I was drunk and/or high almost every day!
I know that a lot of people abuse drugs and alcohol for many more years than I did, but the years of abuse for me were very formidable years. During these years the body is still developing including bone building. Because of this many of my "systems" have been broken. In fact, when it was time for my children to be born, I would not go into labor. The doctor said my delivery system was broken from the drug abuse and doctors were shocked that my children were not effected at all.
When my friend said, "That's because Connie loves her body" I didn't know until many days after hearing her say that, that I really do. Most of you have seen me or pictures of me so you have to know that this is deeper than a mirror image.
My skin on my legs is beginning to sag a little when I walk, my bottom is a little droopy, my belly has skin that was stretched way out to accommodate very large babies, my breasts really need a bra, my arms have muscles if I try really hard otherwise the skin sags there too, and last but certainly not least, my face shows every smile line and every worry on my brow.
If I don't work hard, my body gets so weak so quickly that walking is difficult. 2 months ago or so I broke my toe, (again!) so I couldn't work out at all. This week I got back on track and I am feeling the muscles in my legs, owie!!
But just today it hit me!
I do love my body! Not what I see but what I know! With everything I have put my body through, it still shows up for me! It shows up with each breath I need. It shows up each time my eyes need to blink. It shows up with each heart beat. It shows up by pumping my blood. It showed up big time to create other lives! I have wonderful children because of this amazing body!
It is patient with me when I ignore it and don't do the right things, but the minute I give it the attention it needs and deserves, it responds! It responds by carrying me where I need to go. It responds by letting me hear music. It responds by letting me see. I am so blessed to have this body. Yes, this imperfect body! This imperfect body is there for me. It takes everything I do and everything I don't do and is still there for me.
So I guess I didn't really know it, but my friend is right, "Connie does love her body!" This body proves that God created us to live forever. We know that isn't possible, but the body's resilience is truly amazing.
So for many years I have functioned with a less than perfect body. But.......
I HAVE FUNCTIONED!!
Every ache and pain is a reminder of what I have done, but also of what God can do. I am grateful that even though I am weak and imperfect, I AM HERE!!

We just spent a week in Mexico, partly business, partly pleasure, all amazing!
While there I noticed how very approachable everyone really was. It was like everyone was open to meeting new people. And there were lots of different people from all over the world.
I had several people approach me and ask me what brought us to Cancun. Engaging in conversation was seamless and comfortable. But, something interesting happened. I had several people tell me that I was "attractive".
Now don't get me wrong, I don't think I am unattractive but, I am not unrealistic. I can look around and clearly see "beautiful" people and I am not one of those. I am average and I am ok with that. I like my hair, my style, and my smile. So, hearing people say I was "attractive" got me thinking.
What does the word "attractive" really mean?
I think attractiveness comes much more from the heart than mere appearance. When I think about the people I found "attractive" while on vacation, they were people that were open and friendly. I hope that's why people thought of me as "attractive".
There is a new thought about connection and partnering in our world today. It's about tribe building and that comes from attracting like minded people. So, being considered "attractive" today is the highest compliment out there. If others find you "attractive" it's quite possible that those are the very people that you belong connected to. Comforting and encouraging thought, right? :)
Everyone deserves "the Good Inside," and, yes, "Purity is Possible."
